Giving Over Your Reins

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

This is one of my favorite Bible verses, and it helps me on my daily path in this adventure we call life. Yet, like so many people, it is hard for me to give God full control of my life. We humans like to control things our way. I’m no different. Sometimes, or maybe I should say, all the time, I think I know what is best for my life. Why do I, or you, need God to control? Let’s think of it this way. Imagine riding a horse out in the pasture. You have both reins in your hand and are in full control of your horse; letting him know which direction you want to go. You are looking ahead at your path and so is your horse. The path looks straight and smooth so you start to gallop. The ride is great but suddenly your horse steps in a prairie dog hole. Both you and the horse go stumbling to the ground. How did that happen? After all, YOU were in control. You get up, brush yourself off, and climb back in the saddle. Maybe a little help is in order. You decide maybe you will throw one rein up to God and you will hold the other. You start riding again, but after awhile, God wants to go right and you want to go left. Which way is your horse going to go? The answer is neither way. He’ll either stop or buck you off. But if you throw both reins to God and let Him lead your horse, you can ride knowing that God knows where all the prairie dog holes are and the best route to the place you need to go.
